exterior

The Sierra RS Cosworth wears its original factory Black paint, which is in good condition.  The front bumper is an original RS500 bumper with clear lenses and air vents.  The rear spoiler is upgraded with RS500 mouldings.  RS500 decals accent the sides and rear gate.  Gold 17” BBS wheels wear Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tires measuring 215/40 up front and Federal 595 RS-R tires measuring 235/40 on the rear.  The spare tire is an original 15″ 205/50 tire on the original rim.

motor and transmission

The motor is a Cosworth “200” sourced from a 1992 Ford Escort RS Cosworth and rebuilt with less than 1,500 kms.  The work was performed by the owner who is the lead mechanic for his family racing team.  A Garret T35 turbo charger has a manual pressure regulator and boost controller added during the overhaul.

Other features include a RS500 intercooler, Pro-Ride aluminum radiator, Samco silicone cooling hoses, aluminum fluid reservoirs, carbon fiber timing cover, Ford competition spark plugs and wires, Stage 2 electronics and computer chip rated at 330 horsepower, and fuel pressure gauge.

Power is sent through the Borg Warner T5 5 speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.  Ventilated, slotted, and cross-drilled rotors have been added up front along with rebuilt calipers. The suspension has been upgraded with adjustable control arms, reinforced polyurethane bushings, and gas shock absorbers featuring adjustable height and pressure, as well as, a Ford front strut bar.

interior

The interior sports factory Recaro sport seats trimmed in gray and red cloth, along with gray carpeting and RS Cosworth embroidered floor mats. A leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel is in good condition.  The stereo has a Pioneer cassette player.  The dashboard instrumentation includes a 270-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and a boost gauge. The five-digit odometer reads 86k kilometers (53k miles), fewer than 1,500 of which have been added since the build was completed in February 2019.

test drive

The unassuming exterior did not prepare me for the experience on the road.  The acceleration is incredible, capable of producing g-forces on straightaways and curves.  The suspension is stiff and responsive.  Brakes are sound with the ABS disconnected by choice of the owner (easily reconnected.)  The Recaro seats are comfortable and the sight lines are good.

The Cosworth was made famous on the track and this example only cements its credo.  This car changed me.  More so a need than a want.
